I. COHERENCE vs COHESION – ĐỊNH NGHĨA
- Coherence hiểu đại khái là sự mạch lạc liên kết giữa các câu với nhau. Tức là sự triển khai ý. (về mặt ý nghĩa)
- Cohesion là dùng các linking devices kiểu như in addition, in contrast …để nối các ý, câu và đoạn văn với nhau cho người đọc dễ theo dõi. (về mặt hình thức)
Một bài viết có thể có cohesion nhưng không hề có coherence (tức là về mặt hình thức thì có vẻ xuôi, nhưng về ý nghĩa thì vẫn lỏng lẻo kém logic).
II. COHERENCE vs COHESION – VÍ DỤ
Ví dụ như sau:
Ví dụ 1: “The government should invest more in public transportation. Buses and trains are an affordable way for people to travel. In addition, they can reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Furthermore, it can help the economy by creating jobs in the transportation sector.”
=> Feedback: While each sentence is related to the general topic of public transportation and its benefits, there is no clear logical progression or organization of ideas. The sentences jump from one point to another without providing sufficient explanation or supporting details
Sửa lại như sau:
The government should invest more in public transportation. By improving public transportation, people will have more affordable and convenient options for getting around, which can reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. Additionally, investing in public transportation can help create jobs in the transportation sector and stimulate the economy. Overall, prioritizing public transportation can have a range of benefits for both individuals and society as a whole.
